Canvassing with Turf Cutter

Posted on May 2, 2018

What is Turf Cutter?

Turf Cutter is an amazing tool that will allow you to reach out to specific households within a specific area of your riding. You may have noticed when creating canvass lists that some polling divisions are very large or households are so widely dispersed that it is difficult to canvass. Turf Cutter eliminates these challenges by allowing you to tailor your list to households in a specific region.

Turf Cutter allows you to edit a list based on a specific region. This is useful for large polls that cannot be canvassed all at once.

Note: This tool is only available on the My Voters side of Liberalist.

Using Turf Cutter

Once you have created a list, select Cut Turf from the icon bar on the My List page. On the Turf Cutter page you can select how you want to view the icons on the map by People, Doors, or Both.

You can also Create Turfs Automatically by clicking on the Auto-Cut icon at the top left hand side of the map. You have the option to create turfs that have the same amount of houses for the turfs you create regardless of distance between houses or create turfs based on the proximity of houses. For the second option your turfs may not have the same number of households, however the households will be grouped together based on address which makes the area easier to canvass by walking.

To customize your areas further, you can adjust the turfs that were set by the Auto-Cut tool by hovering over one of the areas and selecting a white box that you will then drag to another point in the map. This will allow you to reduce or add to that turf.

You can also completely customize your turfs to your liking by clicking on the map to choose your starting point, next, make your way around the area that you want to canvass by clicking on the map. Outline the geographical limits of your turf by continuing to click around the boundary of the area you want to canvass. Once you have completed outlining your turf, click on your starting point to finish your Turf outline and click Save. You can repeat this process to create up to 30 turfs for one list.

Great Features

When you are finished creating your Turfs, click on Save & Finish and select the Folder, the name, and the description of the Turf. You can then access your turfs within the Turfs tool on the Main Menu (right under Canvassing) at any time.

Sending your list to the printer or to MiniVAN can be accomplished easily by ticking the boxes next to the turfs you want to canvass, and selecting the action you want to take using the Quick Actions drop-down box.

One of the great features of this tool is that once your turfs have been sent to MiniVAN you can see the progress being made on the list as a whole. The Turf tool will also show you how many times the turf has been sent to MiniVAN so that you can keep track of which turfs remain to be canvassed.

You can Refresh your turf at any point by clicking on the arrow on the far right corner of the turf. This allows you to see any updates to your list, such as people that have been removed because they were canvassed, or people that have been added because they are new voters in your riding.
