Cutting turfs for canvassing is a great way to create manageable lists for your volunteers, but the turf cutting process can be very time consuming. Distributed Canvassing was created to adjust the workflow of launching canvasses to be less tedious – meaning less turf cutting!
To set up a Distributed Canvass first you will need to create a list of those you want to reach out to and save your list as a dynamic list so that it will update every time it is loaded. Next, open the Distributed Canvassing tool and set up your canvass: set a name, how many doors canvassers will receive, select a MiniVAN campaign, and select your dynamic list. You will then be given a list number that you can give to your volunteers to download onto their phones through MiniVAN and the system will cut the turf based on your volunteer’s location, distance between doors, and the number of doors.
Important things to note:
- You will need to have location services enabled for MiniVAN and have a wifi or data connection in order to download the list.
- You will need to enter a list number to download a list, the list can’t be sent to you.
- You will not be able to see the turf until the list number is downloaded
- The doors given to you from the app are the closest doors

MiniVAN Commit Page
In order to improve the performance of the MiniVAN commit page, a 5-minute delay on syncs has been put in place. This means that your syncs will not show up immediately on the page after they are made, but you can manually refresh the page if you need to see all the new syncs more promptly!
You can also now see stats at the top of the MiniVAN Commit page, including how many lists need to be committed into the system, how many doors are in those lists, when the last commit happened, and who committed the data.
For more information on committing your data from MiniVAN, take a look at our guide here.
